Kidney Disease is something that has effected millions of people, not just in America (although thats where its the highest, most likely due to the typical fast food diet) but all over the world. But before we learn how you can help fight Kidney Disease now, we need to learn a little bit more about exactly what it is and why people contract this deadly disease.
Kidney Disease Symptoms
However the symptoms of Kidney Disease are not always obvious, which is why its wise to get tested regularly if you suspect something it up. Symptoms can range from just feeling generally unwell to total loss of appetite and even pain in and around the kidney area when symptoms really start to worsen.
Kidney Disease can initially only be detected by the increase in serum creatinine or protein in the urine. Yet as the Kidneys function decreases, other symptoms become much more apparent.
- Blood Pressure is increased because of fluid overload and production of vasoactive hormones produced by the kidney. This can also lead to or increase ones risk of suffering from a heart attack.
- Potassium accumulates in the blood.
- Urea accumulates, leading to azotemia and ultimately causing uremia. Urea is extracted by sweating and crystallizes on the skin, causing Uremic Frost.
- Erythropoietin synthesis is decreased, which can lead to anemia and cause extreme fatigue.
- Metabolic acidosis, due to over accumulation of sulfates, phosphates and uric acids. This may cause unusual enzyme activity due to the excess acid acting upon the enzymes.
People suffering from Kidney Disease are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and are more likely to suffer from a heart attack in their life time versus someone suffering from just one of the diseases.
Causes Of Kidney Disease
The most common causes of Kidney Disease are diabetes, hypertension, glomerulonephritis. Combined, these three diseases are responsible for causing about 75% of all Kidney Disease in the world today in adults. Certain geographic areas are also more likely to have HIV as a cause of Kidney Failure as well.
In the past, Kidney Disease was thought to have only a very few causes. But in the past few years, many other diseases have been linked to the causes of Kidney Disease and ultimately Kidney failure. Here’s a list of a few of the new diseases found to be linked to Kidney Disease.
- Vascular, including includes large vessel disease such as bilateral renal artery stenosis and very small vessel disease such as ischemic nephropathy and vasculitis.
- Glomerular, such as primary and secondary Glomerular.
- Tubulointerstitial including polycystic kidney disease, drug or toxin induced chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis.
- Obstructive such as with bilateral kidney stones and diseases of the prostate.
- And even on rare occasions, pin worms infecting the kidney can cause nephropathy.
Special Treatments To Cure Kidney Disease
The goal of any treatment or therapy of Kidney Disease is to slow down or even in some cases, stop completely the progression of the disease to stage 5, wich is complete and total kidney failure. Control of blood pressure and treatment of the original disease are the primary goals to manage any Kidney Disease.
Currently several compounds are in development for Kidney Disease, these include bardoxolone methyl, olmesartan medoxomil, sulodexide, and avosentan. Replacement of erythropoietin and calcitriol, two hormones processed by the kidney, is often required in patients with more advanced Kidney Disease. Phosphate Binders are also used to control the serum phosphate levels, which gradually increase as the disease becomes more advanced.
When one reaches stage 5 of Kidney Disease, renal replacement therapy is required in the form of dialysis or transplant. The normalization of hemoglobin has not been found to have any effect of benefit.
People with Kidney Disease are at a much higher risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack. The most common cause of death in those infected with advanced forms of Kidney Disease is more often heart failure than renal failure, thus making it very important to focus on aggressive hyperlipidemia treatment.
